Before signs had lights, they relied on reflective paint for customers to see their message at night. Smaltz paint had tiny amounts of glass in the paint to enable it to reflect the light from oncoming automobile headlights. This Hughes’ Crescent Cottage Paint horizontal wooden sign features Smaltz paint on the letters with some great vintage patina. Some minor chips with paint loss can be seen on the face of this rare sign, along with some cracking on the wood itself.
