Opened in 1886 by Edwin Cawston, Cawston Ostrich Farm was America’s first Ostrich farm and continued in operation until 1935. Currently it is a South Pasadena Cultural Landmark, but this glass paperweight was a great advertising piece used to keep your paperwork attached to your desk while your fan was trying to keep things cool in your office. “Cawston Ostrich Farm” is in an arc across the top, with “California” in an arc across the bottom. The picture in the middle shows multiple ostriches standing looking around. Five small dice are inside the glass paperweight so you could shake the paperweight for your lucky numbers. Measuring one inch tall and three inches across, this heavy glass is textured on the bottom with a metal bottom that has oxidized over the years. No chips or scratches on the glass itself, it looks great for its age. We date this from the late 1920’s to early 1930’s.
