Originally used in London, England, this small glass let customers buy a penny’s worth of ice cream, eat it, and then lick the glass clean. The street salesman would rinse the glass in water, towel-dry it, and reuse it—a practice so unsanitary it was banned in 1898. The glass’s thickness made the contents look larger, so customers felt they got more for their penny. Measuring 3 3/4 inches tall with a 3 1/8 inch round top, this glass remains in excellent condition. The depth of this penny lick is only 1 inch, but it appears larger, creating an optical illusion. It has a tiny air bubble in the glass. Like other penny-lick glasses, it has no markings. 21499-TT
