Penny-A-Lick Ice Cream Glass Penny Lick

Originally used in London, England, this small glass was for customers who bought a penny’s worth of ice cream, ate it, and then licked the glass clean. The street salesman would rinse it in water, towel-dry it, and reuse it. Unsurprisingly, this unsanitary practice led to its ban in 1898. The glass’s thickness made the contents look larger, so customers felt they were getting more for their penny. This glass stands 3 inches tall, has a 2-inch round top, and remains in excellent condition. Mold marks are visible on the stem and inside the glass, along with minor imperfections, but, like other penny-lick glasses, it has no markings. 21498-TP
