Initially used in London, England, this small glass served ice cream to customers who purchased a dip for a penny, ate it, and licked the glass. The street salesman would then dip it in water to rinse it, then towel-dry it. As you can imagine, this was not very sanitary, so it was banned in 1898. When looking through the glass, it appears you are getting a lot for a penny; however, the glass’s thickness made the ice cream appear larger than it was. This particular glass stands 3 3/4 inches tall, has a 2-inch base, and is in excellent condition. Mold marks are evident on the stem, along with some minor imperfections in the glass. Like other penny-lick glasses, this one has no markings. 21494-TP
