They were made out of tin and produced a loud and eerie sound which added to the spooky atmosphere of Halloween. Kids used to carry them around while trick-or-treating and spin them around to make the rattling sound. Vintage Halloween ratchet noise makers were available in various shapes and sizes, often featuring scary images such as black cats, witches, and skeletons.
