Horse Carriage Maker Occupational Shaving Mug

Back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when a gentleman needed a shave, he would visit his local barbershop, where the barber kept each customer’s shaving mug, inscribed with his name and often decorated with an image related to his occupation, in a cabinet. This example, inscribed “G. Sloven” in gold across the top, has a hand painted image of a gentleman and 2 ladies, seated in a 2 horse open carriage, with a driver at the reins, indicating, perhaps, that the owner was a carriage maker. The sides of the shaving mug are lavender with gold trim. It measures 3 1/2 inches tall by 3 3/8 inches in diameter and is in excellent condition with a tiny rim chip, a closed crack in the base, and some wear on the gold trim. 17344-81QQT
