Penny Licks were introduced in London, England, in the 1800s and were named after the fact that a customer could purchase one penny’s worth of ice cream in a glass. The street vendor would put an ice cream dip in the glass, and once the ice cream was eaten, return it to the vendor, who would merely wipe the inside of the glass with dirty water and serve it again with ice cream inside to the next customer. This was one of the causes of the tuberculosis outbreak in the late 1800s, which was very unsanitary. This penny lick glass stands 4 inches tall, with a base that measures 2 5/8 inches, and a top measuring 2 3/8 inches. The glass is free of chips and cracks, and is made of thick glass. 21426-RP
