Complete with the Maryland state shield, this large porcelain sign, called a Lighthouse sign, measures 60 inches tall by 27.5 inches wide. The Lighthouse name derives from how the signs were used in the 1920s: they were attached to a structure with lights on top, usually at the entrance to a town. The outer frame of this porcelain sign is indented, allowing the sign to have a frame around its outer edge that blends into its housing. “Maryland Casualty Co.” is on the top half of this sign, with “Automobile Insurance”, “Agents Everywhere” on the bottom half, with the Maryland state shield, and multiple cars travelling on the highway in the middle. The sign has a few porcelain chips on the face and around the outer edges, typical for a century-old sign. The colors pop nicely on this large sign, which also has a glossy finish. With the porcelain chips, some slight rust is on the exposed metal underneath.
